My R32 has a tendency to, after it's been in Windows for a while, rev the fan up to full RPMs. It's not doing anything, so I doubt the CPU is getting hot, and most of the time, if I open the lid for a second, it will slow down to 'silent' again and I can close it and it stays....any ideas why this might be / any fixes??
Thanks,
Brian

Maybe your laptop is running hot for some reason. I have the same problem with my R30 running on full power. Recently I investigated this problem a little more in detail.
Measure the CPU temperature with the excellent little program mobmeter. It tells you the actual temperature and the critical temperature.

If you are at a high temperature of >75 C then:
(1) Check with the task manager if maybe some program is keeping the CPU busy all the time.
(2) I am lifting the rear part of the thinkpad for about 2 cm or so while keeping the fan exhaust unobstructed to increase fan efficiency. This gives you about 4 C, which is crucial if the room temperature is high.
(3) Set the CPU speed to a minimum by setting a battery maximizing power scheme (pre-XP) or using the freeware program speedswitchxp v14
(4) remove unnecessary PCMIA cards, which in my R30 increase the CPU temperature easily by 5 C (USB 20 card) and usually push it over the edge (only when running 100% CPU of course)
(5) Always open the laptop's screen when working with an external screen, because I think some heat is drained through the hand rest surface.
