R40 Constantly burning hot

#1 Post by Asbradley21 » Wed Mar 21, 2007 3:59 am

I've hot me an R40 and it must have failed out of special ed. The fan only spins up once it gets insanely hot. My average temp. is around the lower 60s(C) for the cpu and mid 50s for the hdd. It has been doing this for a good while (at least a year) and I've been neglectful and just ignored it. What the hell could be wrong?
(BTW: I'm running Ubuntu Linux)

What type R40 do you have? I have had R40s 2723-26M and 2722-3GG and neither of them get burning hot at all (probably because they have Pentium-M CPUs).

My R40 runs hot & it's Pentium M.

At least that's the case when it stays @ my house, but that's b/c my house is hot most of the time.

Actually, during the winter, it kept me from freezing (b/c during winter, my house is as cold as the refrigerator).

However, during the summer,

I keep swatting --> I draw a salty sea on the left palm rest of the ThinkPad. And it gets all sticky & stuffs.

Sorry if this is the case.

I hear that all the high-end models like T60 never gets hot.

I was also surprised by how cool A 31p remained.

The left side parmrest is directly over the hard drive and RAM. The hard drive has the ability to get quite hot indeed, depending on what power saving mode you have set it to. I have mine set for fairly aggressive power saving and it stays fairly cool, with the palmrest staying mildly warm. The underside where the RAM is gets quite warm but not uncomfortably so.

I'm running Windows with mine and I have a Hitachi 5k100 hard drive, and I have the Hitachi "Power Booster" software with which to set the hard drive power save mode. Under linux, I suspect hdparm will allow you to do a similar thing.

Kinda funny, I upgraded hte hard drive when I bought it to a hitachi harddrive out of a powerbook. I pulled it out shortly after shutting it off and it burned my hand.

Is there no way to force the fan to kick in sooner?

Looks like setting the hard drive power save state with hdparm will drop your temperatures a lot. The fan only cools the CPU and is located at the rear right of the R40. When it is running, it will have minimal effect on your hard drive temperature.

It is possible to turn the fan on earlier, I think there is someone developing a fan control utility for both Windows and Linux and I have used it on my R40 with varying degrees of success. It can turn the fan on at up to seven different speeds but for some reason it turns itself off after about ten seconds. I gather this does not happen for the T4x series which this utility was designed for.

I just installed linux recently and I have used the fan control utility with a success rate of absolute Zero.

The fan control utility wasn't really designed for the R40 anyway as far as I can tell. It just sort of works with it, sometimes.

In this case, fiddling with the fan is a waste of time.

I knew it wasn't designed for the r40, but ya'know, couldn't hurt trying.

I had an R40 and distinctly remember 60C as the trigger point for the fan to come on.
