A20m CMOS Battery

#1 Post by dstrong » Wed Mar 21, 2007 4:51 am

The cmos battery in my A20m is starting to go bad. The first time I boot the laptop I have to reset the system clock on the laptop. I have ordered a new cmos battery for my system. How hard is it to replace the cmos battery. I can't find any information online regarding this unless i'm not looking in the right place. Thanks

Lots of useful and important information can be found in IBM/Lenovo's Hardware Maintanence Manual. The one for your particular model can be downloaded from here:

A2*m, A2*p HMM

Since I don't have an A2x system, checking the HMM says you need to remove the following to access the backup battery:

- main battery pack (and AC adapter)
- panel covering MiniPCI area on the bottom of the system (with the system upside-down and the battery bay closest to you, the panel on the left, above the battery)
- the MiniPCI card (metal cover and card itself)
- the backup battery inside the MiniPCI bay

Re-assemble in reverse order.

You will have to enter the BIOS and reset the date and time once more, but that should solve your problem.

edit: Just noticed that there seems to be a problem with downloading the file from the Support page. Goggling "23p0896.pdf" (the filename of the HMM), shows this site:

Thanks for the help with my question I ordered the new battery on 3/20/07. This is my first laptop I've ever owned I'm still getting use to working on it.
