replacement HD R52

#1 Post by cuppingmaster » Wed Mar 21, 2007 1:52 pm

So I'm pretty sure my R52 HD is toast (I put it in my backpack without making sure it was fully asleep, and that seems to have royally messed it up. I can't even restore from the service partition properly -- I end up with none of the thinkpad specific software. And that's IF I can get it to boot up at all!)

Anyways, I was roaming around BestBuy during lunch this afternoon and found a Hitachi Travelstar (same kind IBM uses) 100GB for about $108. The only thing is, of course, is that it probably doesn't have the APS modifications that IBM added to it. Anyone think that I can just switch it out, and then go back and uninstall the APS software? For that matter, is there even a hardware component to the APS system? That would be tons better than buying an 80GB replacement from IBM for $200 plus their recovery CDs.

Any ideas, help, would be appreciated!

p.s. - Those "Geek Squad" guys at Best Buy told me I just had a bad virus, but somehow with the non-booting I'm almost 100% sure it's hardware.

As far as I can remember, R52s are as sensitive to non-IBM HDs as does a T43.
