Upgrade from 5400RPM to 7200RPM harddrive?
Upgrade from 5400RPM to 7200RPM harddrive?
Just got my Z61m, and it got a Toshibe MK1234GSX, 120GB, 5400RPM harddrive. Would I win some speed opgrading to a 100GB, 7200RPM Hitachi harddrive, is it worth the money? And is the Toshiba harddrive fast of a 5400RPM to be (it is quite, thats for sure).
Ok, do you feel like the 7200RPM hard drive is much faster than a 5400RPM.jdhurst wrote:I been using a 7200-rpm drive for years now. I would never turn back and the only thing that would grab my attention is a yet-to-built 10,000-rpm drive. ... JD Hurst
I have the feeling that the hard drive in my system is the thing holding the system back in performance, think I will go for a 7200RPM upgrade.
Getting a 7200rpm is a better choice,
My Z61p came with seagate 7200rpm 100 GB. However, when I replaced the original seagate momemetus 7200rpm 100 GB hard drive with a 120GB 5400rpm toshiba MK1234GSX hard drive for backup purposes, the fan was constantly running (felt it with hands, after sensing the system was getting hotter than usual).
Sent back the HD to newegg.com, put back the original and everything is back to normal.
So am now waiting for Seagate 7200.2 160GB to come in the market.

Z61p - 9452 JRU, XP pro 32-bit, 15.4 WUXGA, Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz, 160GB-54k HDD, 2GB-RAM, 256MB-VRAM, Intel ABG Pro, Bluetooth, DVD Multi Burn.
Ok, so the 7200RPM disk is cooler than a 5400RPM disk, interesting. Must have one, what to go for the Hitachi or Segate, which one is faster, and generates lees noise/heat, and is most energy saving???chaukap wrote:Getting a 7200rpm is a better choice,

Is it really true that Lenovo is charging money for restore cd's now, remembering back in the old IBM days, that is was totally free getting the restore cd's???.
Between Hitachi and Seagate, both with 100GB 7200rpm, I think it is a matter of choice and getting a good deal.
One way to compare is to download the pdf data sheets from their websites for the two drives and compare. Other option is to go through reviews like on newegg.com.
It is kind of a surprising that Lenovo (while using IBM brand name) puts a Seagate or a Toshiba in Thinkpads. While the Travelstar HD series is originally by IBM before Hitachi GST took over.
Just for curioisty : Does any of other Thinkpad models come with Hitachi drives ??

Hitachi's 7K100 is somewhat faster than the 7200.1, but has a three-year warranty rather than a five-year one, so if you are planning to use the drive for longer than three years, that would be a Seagate advantage.
Now, the announced-but-not-yet-shipping 7200.2 is about the same speed as the 7K100, while Hitachi has not yet announced their next-generation perpendicular-recording drive (rumoured to be the 7K200).

It is strange, my old Toshiba M70 came with Hitachi hard drive, and my new Z61m came with Toshiba hard drive, kind of funny
Don't think it is so much brand as it is price when laptop manufactures select hardware for there products, if Lenovo can get a Toshiba hard drive cheaper than a Hitachi, I don’t think they will have any problem selecting the cheaper ones.
Ok, sounds promising, maybe waiting for the next generation would be the best right now.tomh009 wrote:Hitachi's 7K100 is somewhat faster than the 7200.1, but has a three-year warranty rather than a five-year one, so if you are planning to use the drive for longer than three years, that would be a Seagate advantage.

Don’t ever think I have owned a piece of hardware for over a year, new stuff is coming out, and will always upgrade to newer at some point, so don't really care for 2, 3, or 5 years warranty (though here in Denmark and the rest of EU, we always gets at least 2 years warranty by law).

As far as I can remember, the IBM division that deals with storage is completely sold to Hitachi without further arrangement or deal in shares or in management. That way, IBM became really separate with Hitachi without any form of partnership at all.
The story is really different than when Lenovo acquires IBM PC Division. IBM still own shares in Lenovo, thus in some critical management and strategy decision they still get involved.
IBM might find solutions offered by Seagate-Maxtor and Toshiba is more competitive so it choose them instead of Hitachi.
