R51 upgrade

#1 Post by arco » Wed Mar 28, 2007 1:26 pm

Hi everybody,

I have a R51 model 1829-k6g, which came with a 30GB HD, 512Mb RAM and a Pentium M cpu @ 1.5 GHz 599 MHz.

I have already changed the HD with a 100Gb one, with no problems at all. Then came a RAM upgrade to 1Gb. Things got a bit faster but I expected more (the new RAM value appears OK on the computer properties window...).

So, my first question is: Do I have to proceed to some additional upgrades (BIOS, maybe?) before my system can fully benefit from the doubling of RAM?

If not, I will also consider a CPU upgrade. As I am totally in the dark here, I would greatly appreciate if someone could guide me towards some compatible cpus for my setup.

Thanks a lot for your time,

Speed upgrades are rarely noticeable unless it's a huge increase (e.g. from 350 MHz to 2 GHz or from 128 MB to 2 GB). Your Pentium M 1.5 GHz should do fine for now since an incremental upgrade won't be that noticeable.

One dumb trick I learned from supporting a lot of users is that if an user requests for an upgrade, then complains that he doesn't feel the upgrade did anything, was to re-install the old component and let the user feel the slowness. Then go back and reinstall the upgrade. So try going back to 512 MB and you'll see. :D
