the dvd/cdrw drive will not read cd or cdr's but will read dvd's just fine.
I have tried a different drive and it does the same thing. Is this a hardware issue or is it a Windows XP issue? Someone please help. Thanks, Vern

have u tried the device mangler, remove and have it detect it again?

Or update any drivers if needed on the support page of ibm?

I tried removing drive in device manger and rebooted. No help. How do I boot to the cdrom drive for the firmware update if it will not read the cd. I tried buring the iso file to a dvd on another computer and tried to boot to it but it didn't work. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Vern

then if it will not also boot to the cd even before the OS then it has to be the cd controller on the system board. But what is strange is it reads only DVDs.hmmm

how about the BIOS is it up to date? You can try that, there is one version that is a non-diskette. You just execute it after you dl it.

double check and make sure this is the right one, i used the info that u posted.

Hey MeanGene, I tried the bios update, but it didn't help. It will read and play a dvd but will not read or play cd. I really appreciate all your help. Since I have tried a different drive and it does the same thing, I will have to agree with you that it is something to do with the cd controller on the board, but what? Vern
