New or Used Motherboard?

#1 Post by srkumar1946 » Mon Apr 23, 2007 10:14 pm

Hi Friends,

Quite a number of postings in this forum suggest that some of the A2x series thinkpads, after few years of use, develop motherboard problems resulting in defective notebooks due to boot failure, power issues, screen freeze etc.The only alternative is to replace the motherboard either with a brand new one or a used one.my query is how reliable will be a used motherboard, since it would have been taken out of a used notebook;will it last for a few years or it would be better to go for a new motherboard?in other words, what will be the life span of a used motherboard, since a M/board does not have any moving parts?the price difference is also significant between a new and used motherboard.also is it worthwhile to spend that much extra on a new board when the defective notebook had been in use for a few years?
Thanks
Ramkumar

About a year ago I bought an A20m That needed a motherboard. I found an new(old stock) board on E-bay. but if the price is difference great I think i would go with used. The reason is, it seems either you get a good board or bad , the bad ones die early, so if the board is used and still good it should be ok. I have no evidence to back this up, just my opinion.

Hi spuddog,

thanks a lot for ur observations:i concur with ur opinion that the M/board is either good or bad whether one buys new or used one.
