New (ForMe) R51 Advise

#1 Post by spuddog » Wed May 16, 2007 7:14 pm

I just got a R51 (2888-RU). It has a Celeron 1.3, (2) 256 ram modules. I don't have the money to immediatly upgrade both ram and cpu. what are your opinions on which would produce a more noticable increase in speed? The comp did not come with a caddy or hard drive cover, I have noticed that many laptops for sale don't include the caddy or cover, exactly WHERE do they all disappear to?
I have read that Pentium M 725 or 725a are the fastest cpu's for a R51, what is the different between the two? That's all the questions for now, I'm sure there will be more.

Thanks
Scott

Congrats on a fine machine, the R51's are great.

Since you already have half a gig of ram, I'd say spend on a 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm drive. That will get you the most performance.

There isn't much difference between the 725 and 725A, the A chip is newer and has the Execute Disable Bit functionality (not that I know what that does exactly).

If you can grab either for around $30 from eBay, that would be worth it for speed and battery life increases.

Thanks for the reply, upgrading the cpu was my thinking thanks for confirming. I am going to use my 60 gig 7200 rpm drive from my other laptop, so I have that covered. Thanks again.
