Does the R series exhibit power-on failure for you?

#1 Post by oodobah » Fri Oct 08, 2004 11:52 am

i recently (last year) bought a R40 thinkpad as an addition to my A22m computing. this week my A22m failed to power-on. the below excerpt is taken from another user on this subject in the A-series forum. has anyone's R series exhibited this same problem? thanks so much for feedback. -Kent

I have come accross several A22m, A20m, A21m, T20, T21 laptops, which gives a common power-n problem. There are so many defective boards floating around because of this know failiure. I hope IBM has rectied this problem. To be more specific about the problems.

* Machine does not switch on. When you try to switch on the machine your HDD light flash and goes off.
* If machine switches on after several tries then there won't be any display.
* Machine shuts down after 10 to 15 mins of continues usage.
* 0175 CRC error occurs due to the above problem.

I have tried working on these issue as I could do lot of R&D on these planner boards. There seems to be a problem with DC-DC section on the planner board which is malfunctioning after continues load/usage. CRC error is generated as a result of sudden [censored].

There are two ICs used for CPU VRM (Voltage regulator module) ie. ADP3421 and ADP3410. I have tried replacing both the chips along with three MOSFETs (IRF 7811). But the problem persist.

Hi Kent. I have an R32 and a similar problem. Past week it just freezed. I couldn't shut it down but disconnecting the AC adapter. Then it failed to power on. When I try to power it on, the power status indicator illuminates (as in hibernation). Yesterday it worked for a while and then freezed again. The only strange thing I did before this was changing the virtual memory from 381 mb (recommended) to 1 gb. Maybe this caused the problem. Does some one has a hint on this? Thanks Herman.

Same thing at this thread http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=6767 and elsewhere on the A series msg board.

What recourse?
