r60e HD making odd clanking noises

My hard drive has started making rather loud clanking noises, like it is seeking but about 10 times as loud. I downloaded "filemon" from microsoft, and it is explorer.exe that is doing :-(. It does this about every 20 seconds when it is idle.

Any ideas what it might be? This sound is waaayyyy too loud to be healthy, IMO.

Could try HD Tune to see if the drive is failing. A backup might not be a bad idea.
