USB 2.0 possible for A31?

#1 Post by crg7 » Wed May 23, 2007 2:51 pm

Hi all:

After getting ripped off on ebay (described as "USB 2 port card"!! -- it was a USB card with 2 ports), would like your advice.

Is it possible to upgrade to USB 2.0? If yes, what do I buy?

You can either buy a honest to gosh USB 2.0 PC Card (I have an adaptec that does a good job and has firewire too), or you get a Dock and put a PCI USB 2.0 Card in it.

What model did you get and does it give you USB 2.0 speed?
I may be (and want to be) wrong, but I recall reading that the cardbus controller in A31 doesn't support USB 2.0.

Off the top of my head (because I don't have the card with me) is that it's the Adaptec 1422. I haven't tested it, but it sure is one heck of a lot faster than the USB 1.1 port on the machine. I used it last night to move a bunch of big photo files onto my External HDD and it was pretty fast.

Hi:

Really appreciate if you someone can clarify about A31 and USB 2.0.

Is there a cardbus card or other means of installing USB 2.0 ports? If so do post the means and speed results.

CardBus stuff

schen seems to have done that above. schen has an Adaptec AUA-1422 and lists an A31 in the sig. I have used the Adaptec AUA-1420A USB 2.0 only (no FireWire combo) CardBus card with great results in a Compaq notebook (hope that's not a dirty word around here!). I haven't clocked the actual speed but it seemed to work faster than the onboard USB 2.0 port in my R52. I know the A31 has a CardBus-capable slot so I assume any CardBus USB 2.0 adapter would work. Perhaps another A31 owner can confirm or deny this. I would stay away from Zonet, if they still offer a USB adapter. It gave me trouble.
