Suggestions for A31 replacement

#1 Post by crg7 » Wed May 23, 2007 2:57 pm

Hi:

My A31 is in its fifth year and going strong - no problems so far. Since I use it 12+ hours a day, it is bound to fail soon.

Any suggestions for a suitable replacement (Thinkpad of course)? Does lenovo have plans to introduce a 17" UXGA screen?

Hello,

What will you do with your new laptop ?

How much can you pay for it ?

Do you want to buy an used machine, or a brand new one ?

Are there some specific features you'd like to find ? (particular resolution, weight... and so on...)

:)

Assume no constraints - ignore my needs.
Think about the specs and design of A31.

Unfortunately, they (Lenovo) seems to have abandoned that part of the market.... meaning the "mobile workstation". The closest in current models or relatively current models is to find the highest spec R series available. One that has 1394 and the 15" IPS screen. The newest R61 moves it closer in build to the T Series, but then they did away with the more desirable IPS screen.

Who know what the future holds, though I've been kinda waiting for a 17" TP as well.

One other possibility would be to find the newest built A31p you can find and load it up to the max: 2.4Ghz CPU, 2Gb RAM, DVD Multi Burner, Dual 120Gb 7200/5400rpm HDDs! :D
Family Daily Drivers- T430s, T530, X220
Work- Sadly, the ThinkPads have gone away...... and replaced by HP ProDesk SFF drone machines :(

Historic Retired ThinkPads- T42p, X20, A31p, 701c, 760XD, WorkPad C505

The 15.0" Flexview UXGA T60p would be the best replacement.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)

The 15" SXGA+ FelxView screen is still available while they last.

Will look into T60p.

Prefer a 17" UXGA screen - then I don't have to get an external monitor. Dell has M90 and Inspiron 1705 but I would rather get a Thinkpad.

Will writing to Lenovo help?

It can't hurt. All they can do is say no which would put you back where you started. The HPs nw9440 and forthcoming 8710w are both 17" notebooks with WUXGA options.

Here's a brain tickler for you guys then...

An A31p replacement that still has a 9 pin sub D serial port. I too am looking to replace my A31p at some point, but that serial port is mandatory for a very specific application.

The docks still have the serial port.
I was considering replacing my A31 with my X60t with dock and replacing the X60t with whatever is newer at that time. X63T, X70T Perhaps?

I'm currently carrying 2 laptops so that would reduce the weight considerably.

heya,
how far can one go up in models from an A31 and re-use the dock, port replicator and ac adapter? i know the T60 is zero for three, but how about the T43 or R60? i want to upgrade without having to trash all the accessories it's taken me so long to accumulate, ya know?

If you talking about the 2631 dock, I think the A31/T30 was the end of the line. I believe all the newer machines with the capacity to take a battery on the backside need the newer series that has the cut-out. I haven't tried putting one of the newer machines (T40/R50) with the 6 cells in the old docks, but I'm guessing that it won't work. Somebody with more experience might want to weigh in on this.

yes, i have the 2631 dock, port replicator, extra ultrabay batteries, and 4 ac adapters. while i know i could find good homes for these here ( ) i'd also make good use of them with a newer machine. well thanks for your input though. i won't get my hopes up too much!
