What can be upgraded on an A22m

#1 Post by ConnorBehan » Thu May 24, 2007 4:04 pm

Instead of getting a new laptop for university I will be sticking with my trusty thinkpad A22m, but there are a few areas where I'm not sure if an upgrade is possible.

Mini PCI card:

I could replace my 10/100 ethernet + 56K modem card with a gigabit ethernet card, but would this be able to access the RJ-45 jack on the back? I know you can get mini PCI gigabit cards that connect to an external RJ-45 jack via a cable, just like my thinkpad, but would it be the same type of connector? If it isn't standardized I suppose I could try to solder the wires together, but even then, the cable that the thinkpad uses, might only support 100Mbps. Any knowledge of this?

Floppy drive:

It's not like I will use it much, but I would rather have an LS-240 instead of a normal floppy drive. The HDD and DVD reader in my thinkpad are in an ultrabay 2000 slot and I've seen ultrabay 2000 LS-240 drives for sale, but is the floppy drive in an A22m replacable?

RAM:

I heard that the official limit for memory in an A22m is 512MB, but that the real limit might be higher. Does anyone know what it is? I've also heard that one 512MB stick will be faster than two 256MB sticks. Maybe I should buy a 512MB stick, then put this in one slot and the original 128MB stick in another slot and then see if the OS still "sees" both of them before i try to go for 1GB.

Video and Sound card:

Thinkpads from this generation usually have ATI rage cards with either 8MB or 16MB. Mine has 8MB, could I upgrade it to one with 16MB? Also, the sound card doesn't look like its upgradeable, is it?

And the rest seems pretty easy, I know the hard drive and optical drive can be upgraded, a few higher PIII processors support this socket and that mini PCI, PC card, PATA and USB 1.1 cannot be upgraded to mini PCIe, expresscard, SATA and USB 2.0 respectively because that would require upgrading the whole bus.
