Monitor for Z60t

I have a Z60t with an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 (driver 6.14.10.4648; I do not know if there is an upgrade for this driver). My operating system is WXP and I have a 14" screen. In the Control Panel, the Display settings indicate that my maximum resolution is currently 1280x768.

I would like to purchase a larger flat panel, wide monitor (perhaps as large as 19-20") and am wondering if my system can handle it. I don't want to purchase a monitor that exceeds the computer's capacity to deliver a sharp image (I work mostly with documents and spread sheets) or a smaller image than the monitor's scale allows. I have noticed that many wide-screen monitors around 19-20" advertise a maximum resolution of 1680x1050. What can I expect out of the Z60t? can I upgrade the Intel driver and improve the resolution for the monitor (and the laptop)? Any other 'surprises' or installation quirks that I might expect?

I use my R60 with a 19" Acer 1440x900 monitor. I have the Intel card as well.

Thanks Fred. Since posting my question, I've learned that one sets the higher resoultion for the monitor after plugging it in via the VGA port and toggling the F7 key (to get the image onto the monitor).

I also learned how to be able to close the lid of my laptop and keep it running with only the monitor by going into the Control Panel to Power Options>Power Manager>Launch Power Manager>the Global Options tab>Events, where, at the bottom of 'Events', I can set the Z60t lid to close without into bypass when it is closed. Seems useful.

Did you encounter any other necessary or desirable steps when you set up you monitor?

I have the dock. I just plug it in. I haven't had any problems.

To find the largest resolution your system accepts:
- Right click on Desktop/Properties/Settings
- Click on display 2 and see max resolution.

One great thing about the Thinkpads is that they allow both displays to be used together, click on Extending your desktop accross both screens.

I use the external display in front of me for the applications I work on (spreadsheet, word processor, browser, ...) and the Thinkpad screen on the side for what you currently have in the background (eMail, IM, clocks, ...). Just setup the location of both displays by dragging 1 & 2 around and your cursor seamlessly goes from one to the other. Very cool.

Just a further question. When I reach the window with the properties of the ThinkPad screen and a monitor, the slider below (for the ThinkPad screen) indicates that the maximum resolution is 1280X 768 when the slder below is moved to the far right. When I click on the second screen, indicating the monitor resolution, the slider below moves back to a middle position. When I then move the slider to the right end or highest setting, it indicates that the maximum resolution would be 1680X1050. Is what I'm doing giving me the correct information for the attached monitor i.e. that the ThinkPad can handle a monitor with a maximum resolution of 1680X1050 and 'give it' that resolution?
