#1 Post by calloftheblade » Sun Oct 10, 2004 11:48 am

I've noticed that on my R51 when I scroll through a window I can hear this faint grinding noise and when I minimize and maximize my windows I can hear a whining noise.... whats causing this?

I have the same problem with an R50p. 1832-22M.

I find that it only happens when the power supply / charger is plugged in. When I am running on battery it does not happen. Try running on battery and let me know if you still hear these noises. They are driving me insane! I just don't know how to tell IBM. It's not exactly a fault. But it gives me a headache. It's like one of these really old televisions that make this high pitched noise whenever they are on.

i have noticed situations like this before on everything from desktops to notebooks..

usually, a reload of the OS solves the problem..
or a simple reboot..

i have a vague feeling that this is the video driver..

though in some rare cases it could be hardware related..

here, more information is needed..

I have done some testing and I think it's hardware related. Here's why:

I re-formatted machine to factory with recovery partition. Throughout the whole process, even while the machine was in MS-DOS, the noise was audible.

I updated Windows XP and the Video driver to the max. - Noise never stopped.

I then formatted the machine again and installed Fedora Core 3 Linux. - Noise never stopped.

I unplug the power adaptor and run off battery - the noise stops immediately.

My next step tomorrow will be to check if the source of the noise can be narrowed down to a part of the machine. Or maybe it's not even coming from them machine but from the AC adaptor ? I will check tomorrow.
