R60 battery

#1 Post by ircr » Sun May 27, 2007 5:02 pm

Hello everybody!

I recently bought a ThinkPad R60 (before I had C100) with Core2Duo, 1giga ram...and that's not important. The battery should last about 5,2 h as it was written on a webpage. The problem is, that battery holds for only 2,5 hours.
I gave a tp to ibm here in Slovenia and they changed the battery, but no success.

Does anybody have a tp r60 with that high battery? I know that I can buy a higher cell battery, but still....it should have last longer.

PS: Sorry for (maybe) wrong english, but I try my best. :D

1. How many cells is the battery? 6 or 9?
2. What`s your power scheme and usuage?

6 cells, here's the pic from power manager... http://shrani.si/files/shema11bdb.jpg

It's strange that fan is running constantly, only turns off for couple of seconds.

Here's the online shop:

6 cell battery is not capable of doing 5.8 hr, however 9 cell can.
Battery & AC

I opted for the six cell battery for my R60, primarily to help keep the weight down. Having the smaller screen and integrated Intel graphics card will help extend battery life. Using just the six cell battery with the screen at four of seven and WiFi on, I was able to get 3:15 minutes of battery life. I also bought the modular battery for the R60.
You can read more info. here.

The 5.2 mentioned on the website should be power consumption, i.e. 5.2 Amp/Hr and not battery life indication.

Sellers.... Thanks for making this clear to me.

Is there any other way to improve battery life?

I saw your power scheme again, you're doing almost everything to maximize it. However, you can get some tips from here.

They always have the settings on the lowest when gaging battery life. The biggest power user on a laptop is the screen. The dimmer it is, the better the battery life.

I recently bought a R60 with a 6 cell battery and my battery lasts 5,2h with lowest (battery) settings on TP powermanagement and wlan off. Which at first was unbelievible to me, but true!
Even with Wlan on, it lasts 4h surfing the net.

Also my fan runs not often and my TP stays cool all the time.

That´s all i have to say!

Perhaps your machine don´t
recognise your powersettings.

Kind regards.

Agotthelf ... you're lucky. My r60 get's warm where I keep my hands (I think it's called palmrest or something like that ).

Fan blows a lot. I had Lenovo C100 and was cold like ice, but the fan was louder, so TP is more silent, but warmer.

And battery should last for about 4 hours. If I compare it with Lenovo C100 again, it lasted almoust 5 hours with standard battery.

I wanted a laptop that's cool & quiet. I'm a bit dissapointed. I think I'm cursed with bad luck. :?

I'll call Lenovo and asked them about my problems.

Please do. One more thing I'm suspecting here is, it could be a case the seller is providing you with a 3rd party generic battery instead of the original IBM/lenovo one.

Hello Ircr,

another matter of fact could be your OS!

I use Xp pro and not Vista!

Because Vista drains your battery more, than Xp does.

I send my thinkpad to lenovo servis and they replaced my battery. It now shows that the battery can hold for about 3 hours. A bit better. :?

I have another (hot) question. I know it's summer and temperature in higher. Temp reaches 30°C in my room. The palm rest is soo hot on booth sides, not only on right, where the hard drive is.
I opened the palm rest cover and i noticed that the memory is covered with silver cover. Wouldn't be better if it weren't covered at all?

I am not sure by silver cover what you mean.

I'm normally at around 30C in my office and the palm rests stay the same temperature whether the machine is on or off, no warming at all even after hours of stuff like processing 600MB satellite images. The fan doesn't come on very often but then it is hard to tell without sticking my ear right next to the vent.

Edit- OK I did just barely detect a VERY slight warmth at the top right of the left palm rest after a day of work. It does sound like there is a heating prob with that other one.

I found a picture of r60 memory: http://shrani.si/files/1915412uf4.jpg

My TP has a silver cover, like this (i made this in paint just to show it as an example): http://shrani.si/files/19154cover12uf5.jpg

Maybe this cover blocks the ventilation and ram dimm's get hotter. It's strange that palm rest on the left gets so warm. I know that on the right is hard drive, but why is left warm too :?:

That's some sort of heat shield in my opinion, it might be put there to protect the memory from the HDD heat (and what not in the vast field of electronics) and I doubt removing it will make things any better for you.

However you're free to experiment by removing it and see if you get any positive results.
