- powers on but turns off by itself after about 10 seconds
- two short beeps
- dead backlight; IBM splash screen is visible on the LCD under bright light
- no external video during the splash screen but it does show a fan error message just before it shuts down; lack of video for the splash screen may be due to my monitor not being UXGA capable - the "fan error" message appears to be displayed in text mode but my LCD monitor says "out of timing".
As per searching the archives, there's no problem with a short in the USB ports. I've removed all easily removable parts (modem/wireless, ethernet, bluetooth, memory, Ultrabay, hard drive, CMOS battery) and the system throws the expected 1-3-3-1 beep sequence (no memory) but remains on for longer than 10 seconds. I let it go about 45 seconds before I turned it off. No use cooking the CPU as the fan is definitely not spinning. Installing one 256MB memory module reverts back to the two short beeps and the 10 second automatic shutoff. Backup battery appears to be good; 3V and plenty enough current.
At this point I'm going to tear apart the system (when I get the time) and verify that the fan is good or get a replacement. After that, source a 26P8133 inverter for the lack of backlight and hope that's all that's wrong with the display. This seems to be a rare part as there's zero/zip/zilch/none/nada/nil/null on eBay at the moment. I know that the HMM says this part is required for the 15" UXGA IPS display but it also says that the same 26P8133 is used in the 15" SXGA+ IPS screen, along with the 62P9872. This seems to indicate that those two inverters are interchangable.
So, has anyone tried using the 62P9872 with a UXGA IPS screen?
