Successful upgrade of R51 CPU
Successful upgrade of R51 CPU
I just finished upgrading my R51 Celeron 1.3 to a Pentium M 725 . the only problem I ran into was during my research CPU-z reported that my processor was a 479 pin instead of a 478. I went with the Pentium M 725 as folks here had reported it to work and it did. Thanks to all those who have shared their experiences. I also added 1GB of Crucial ram for a total of 1.2 GB. It does run a few degrees hotter under full load (~68 now, ~65 before) but that is to be expected. I have not run Prime 95 or MemTest yet, so I will get back to you if there are any problems.
Thanks
Scott
Thanks

Congrats. That's a nice low cost upgrade for improved performance and extended battery run-time. I've upgraded a couple of R51's myself.

So the R51 with a celeron has the same system board as one with a Pentium-M?
I know someone looking to upgrade their R51 and it currently has a 1.6GHz Celeron. I was pretty sure it was the P-M architecture instead of the P4 stuff because of the low clock speed, but wasn't sure. The 1.6ghz banias (725) would be an ok upgrade, but I imagine nothing earth-shattering.

Speed wise you might not see a great improvement, But it should increase battery life. The P-m supports speedstep which will cycle the CPU speed according to the load. the Celeron always runs at the base clock speed. Some people have reported that faster P-m's will work (735,745,755) I couldn't get one bought for a reasonable amount so I don't know if the work or not.

I have a few P-m 735s, I should have him try one.. just gotta smuggle it across the border (luckily it's nice and small lol)

I am planing upgrade my R50e from celeron-m 1.5GHZ to p-m at the same speed. I don't care about increase of battery life. Am I going to see any (or maybe not at all) increase of speed. I kind of doubt I will but what you think? Thanksspuddog wrote:Speed wise you might not see a great improvement, But it should increase battery life. There won't be much difference and the Celeron could possibly be faster. IBM made R50 models for a while. I suppose that a newer Celeron (the units with 1 MB cache and based on Dothans) could be as fast or slightly faster than a Banias Pentium M. Maybe switching gears (Speedstep) requires overhead.ymemuser wrote:I am planing upgrade my R50e from celeron-m 1.5GHZ to p-m at the same speed. I don't care about increase of battery life. I've done the upgrade from a Celeron M340 to a P735 (SL7EP) on my R50E.
I do some video editing and the switch has saved me about 20 min. in converting eg. a 700 MB video file to a 4GB DVD file.
There is no difference, at least in my opinion, when web surfing or light word processing.
I find battery life to be increased from 1 1/2 to about 2 hours with WIFI on and normal internet activity.
Just my impressions...nothing bench-marked.

Thanks. You just confirmed my thoughts about c-m vs. p-m at the same speed level. One more prove how actually good celeron-m is.ms5133 wrote:I've done the upgrade from a Celeron M340 to a P735 (SL7EP) on my R50E.

Thanks. I better will stay with my 1MB L2 Dothan based celeron-m which is great CPU (maybe greatest value CPU on current market).underclocker wrote:There won't be much difference and the Celeron could possibly be faster. upgrade
ok withought getting flamed, could someone in the know please tell me the fastest cpu my r50 1836-3uu will handle as an upgrade please currently has the p4m 1.6 installed i like the speed step its really a nice feature, so i wish to keep that.....
thanks
thanks
Re: upgrade
Anything in the Dothan standard voltage list with a 400MHz Front side bus would work with the following exceptions; Stay away from the 7**As. You also need to ensure you get a B stepping chip. The C stepping chips do not work at full speed. Cooling is another issue.drw1710 wrote:ok withought getting flamed, could someone in the know please tell me the fastest cpu my r50 1836-3uu will handle as an upgrade please currently has the p4m 1.6 installed i like the speed step its really a nice feature, so i wish to keep that.....

Re: upgrade
R50's take the same CPU's as T41's - Intel Mobile Pentium M (Centrino) 400MHz FSB. My R52 has one as well, but it's 533MHz FSB.zverg wrote: What? I thought the P4-m motherboards were different
I was under the impression that the R50 came with a P4-m (NOT a P-m) or a Celeron-m, the R51 came with a P-m OR a Celeron-M, etc..
now I'm confused again.

Here's a good table showing which machines have the Pentium 4-M

Same for Pentium M Dothan

..and Banias

There were two motherboard variants for the R40's - Pentium 4 M and Pentium M.
With the introduction of R5x line, only the Pentium M family motherboards are used.
The fastest possible processor for R50 or R51's is the 2.1GHz Pentium M with a 400MHz bus. Cooling may very well be an issue at that speed, but note you may be OK, the R50p used the same cooling fan as all the other R50/R51's. That was for a 1.7GHz Banias. The GPU's had their own heat sinks. More input is needed from those that have done the upgrade.

Sucessfull upgrade
I want to report a sucessfull upgrade to Dothan 755 processor on a ThinkPad R51-2887, using last bios available.. idle temperature is 42....and increase to 60C when full load.
Im using 1GB matched pair memory... with UBUNTU, WINDOWS and Mac OS 10.4.9
