HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GMA-4082N is reading DVDs very slow

#1 Post by z/svc » Mon Jun 11, 2007 3:05 pm

Hello,

My Z61m has HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GMA-4082N drive. I have some DVDs which were burned by my desktop (it has also LG DVD drive, but another model: GSA-H10N). I use TDK DVD+R media.

When I copy these DVDs to my Z61m is behavies strange: it starts copying with 8-9 MB/s and is slows down to aroung 1.2 MB/s. I use FAR Manager to copy it and it shows me speed of the process.

The DMA is enabled, it shows Ultra DMA-2. DVD drive firmware is CX08.

I burned TDK DVD and burning speed was maximum: 8x.

Any suggestions about this problem, please?

Many thanks!

If this only happens on burned media, I would reburn the DVD at 1x. Then check to see if the drive has an issue with the DVD. If it still doesn't work it may be an issue with the DVD drive.

I have had issues with burning DVDs at the maximum speeds supported by the medium. Typically, I do not have any problems if I burn at half the rated speed of the disk.

All DVDs I have I burned with 4x speed (while my desktop burner and media supports up to 16x) and I have no problems with reading my DVDs on the desktop. So this is an issue if the DVD in Z61m.

I am still doing a search on the firmware updates for my DVD drive but it is confusing. I see that this drive is using by many manufactuters, there is a lot of firmware versions and I don't understand it well yet.

But first of all I'd like to check if this is not a simple software issue/driver problem.

Thanks for your help.

I use WIndows XP and Linux (Fedora Core 6), and I don't have any problems, nor did I have to do anything special for mine to work well. So, I would call Lenovo (assuming it is still under warrently).

May I ask you to provide me the model and firmware version of your drive? You can find it in the Device Manager or your recording software will tell you that. Thanks.

Hi all,

For further reference: problem is solved. It has nothing to do with the hardware.

I am using FAR Manager software (something like Norton Commander) and I was copying data using this software.

I figured out that one option is disabled: F9 -> Options -> System settings -> Use system copy routine.

After enabling this option DVDs are copying with full speed and with no further problems.

Regards,
