Hitachi 7200 rpm hard drive incompatible with r52?

#1 Post by watchtower7 » Sun Jun 24, 2007 9:58 pm

I am trying to do a hard drive swap/clean install on my new r52.
When in insert it (properly installed in caddy etc) it goes to an error message.

Then I tried to open the drive connected to a usb adapter and it sits and clicks.

When I attach the drive to my dell no problems.

Any ideas?

This one definitely means that it's not getting enough power. It could be the port, the USB enclosure or the variance on an individual drive (I also have a Hitachi 7K60 that will not power up from USB -- I had to use a housing with an external power supply).

I renstalled said drive in a dell just to be sure it worked-and it did, reformatted, reinstalled in the thinkpad, error message, managed to get thru windows install. Boots into error message and hit esc -works fine. Don't have a clue wha the problem is.

My external carry case comes with two USB connectors (to the host computer), which merge into a single connector for the carry. I have to unplug all the other USB devices and plug this two connector to have the 7K60 working.

Sounds like you are hitting a total current output limit on your R52's USB subsystem. You should be fine once you mount the drive internally, though.

As I said, it should work fine internally. Several posters have asked for details on that error message you are getting when you do that. Can you please provide details?

Not anymore. I sold it. I don't play well with idiotic cumbersome products.
