Wireless PCI MIni Identification
Wireless PCI MIni Identification
I just purchased a surplus Thinkpad R50P from Boeing Surplus in Seattle. It did not come with recovery disks, so I am doing a fresh load of Windows XP Pro.
I cannot figure out how to tell which Wireless card I have and Which Ethernet card is in this machine. There appear to be two sets of drives for each device I do not know which oine to install.
Also I installed the Bluetooth drivers but there appears to be no bluetooth (Fn F5 does not turn anything on apparently).
Also, I have a Samsung ATA 80Gb Harddrive which will not boot on theis machnine. I have decided to keep the Travelstar 7200 Rpm drive the machine came with, but couldn't figure out why the drive would not work.

Welcome to thinkpads.com!
The best thing you can do to get familar with your new system would be to download a copy of the Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) from here:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 53169.html
This guide will show you where everything is, and more importantly, how to remove them if something is wrong. It also contains some basic troubleshooting information.
For software for the R50p, go to this site:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-53178
It has the drivers and utilities you will need. One of the first things you should probably grab is a copy of PC Doctor. This program will allow you to check out most of the hardware in your system.

Okay, I have not lookd at the maintenance manual, but have checked out maintenance videos.
I have installed many of the drivers availabel from the Lenovo site.
I have gotten the hotkeys working, now when I press Fn-F5 I get the message that 'Lenovo Wireless Adapters (802.11 and Bluetooth) are not installed on this system'.
I am assuming that I have the Modem CDC card not the Bluetooth Modem CDC card. Would really like to be able to check this out also, but I cannot identify which one I have without taking the machine apart.
In Device manager I have an Network card that does not have drivers. I have gotten the Lan drivers running so it should not be the Ethernet card I am seeing.
There are 4 different Wireless drivers on the Lenovo site. I cannot figure out which Mini PCI device I have so that I can install the correct drivers.
PC Doctor does not give any helpful information.
Any suggestions?

You don't have to take apart the machine to look at which cards you have. Once you uncover the door where the MiniPci is, just read the FRU or the part # and reference the HMM and it will tell you exactly which card you have.
Z61p (WUXGA)/2.16ghz/2gb/60gb, R51/1.8ghz/1gb/160gb, R40/1.5ghz/2gb/80gb, 600E/366mhz/416mb/20gb, Project R51 with SXGA+
You are right. On page 85 of HMM, the keyboard and bezel have to be removed. From the FRU parts list there is 9 different MiniPci cards that are available for the R50/p Series. 5 a/b/g cards, 3 b/g cards, 1 b cards. You can look on the lenovo website and have it detect your system, and find out which card you might have. Or you remove keyboard and bezel and definitely be sure which card you have.
