Thinkpad A31 Locking Up

#1 Post by Ellogg » Mon Jul 02, 2007 4:15 am

Alright everyone

I am new to the site, but have had a look for some solutions to the problem I am having, but can't find a match.

I have had my A31 for 4 years easy, as they say it is a workhorse, and had a good inings, anyway it has just started to lockup on me intermitantly while in use, then when logging off, windows is shutting down screen. I read one topic informing of when ac supply removed but this is at any point.

I am suspecting a windows fault as normally I would get the log in menu on XP at start up but this now starts direct into desktop screen???. Could this also point to HDD failure or Chip overheating checked fan and cleaned still getting issue.

Any help would be great thanks in advance everyone

Hi, 1. you might need more ram memory 512MB is good the days.
2. maybe you have too many start progs. do (msconfig) that is
why VISTA put it in ADM Tools.
3. try to cut back on services that are running.
XPsp2 Win2k ==20-30
VISTA ==50-who knows

How long has it been since the machine has had a rebuild; meaning to reload the OS and software from scratch?

Boot into safe mode, if it doesn't lockup then look into an OS reinstall if it's been awhile.

I have just put my dads HDD in, as he also has a A31 and after a couple of minutes running off this it also froze. So I do suspect a chip/motherboard issue even more now. Would it be worth buying some spares and swapping or just buy a new one?

Thanks again everyone

I'd say that your system has a problem, not related to the hard drive or software (since you've swapped drives). This leaves a couple of more items to verify. Before throwing money at the problem, grab a copy of PC Doctor for the A31 from here:

Diskette version or CDROM image

Boot the system off diskettes/CD and run some of the tests in "looping" mode. Once you have selected a test category to run, press the F2 key and change the "Set Pass Count" value from 1 to say, something like 50 or 100. Then execute the test. PC Doctor will continue to repeat the diag for the number of loops you have specified. I'd at least run these:

- CPU/Coprocessor
- Systemboard
- Video Adapter

You can also run the "Memory Test - Full" but you shouldn't need to specify more than 3 loops as it takes a long time for even a single pass.

Alright Ray

Followed you orders with PC Doc found system on locked up whengoing from different screens did all the test but did not fail on these. Although when I done the video test some areas did fail. There was no pattern to any of the lock ups, but I have been running speedfan this shows only 1 temp. signal which is around 51degs showing a flame???

Again still unsure what to do?

Thanks for your help
