1. There's a shrink feature in Vista, it can do it for you. Also, if you're planning to dual boot with another OS, it should give you an option as well. But I would suggest using the former.
The predesktop area would stay healthy as long as:
i) No HDD failure occurs.
ii) you don't make it visible to your OS through BIOS.
iii) you don't format the HDD.
2. Your model doesn't have a Turbo memory. In general, Vista recognizes Turbo memory as Intel Flash Cache Logic Chip in the device manager.

2.-can't answer that one-

1: I prefer the paid Acronis Disk Director and use the boot CD that the user can create with it for my partition jobs. I've used it a lot and it is rock solid. This will not destroy the Recovery partition unless you -tell- it to. The Vista partition applet was tried once by me. I found it confusing and very annoying. (maybe it's my low IQ or something?)
3: Vista will run faster if you dump the Aero Glass "feature" and use the Classic GUI on the desktop and in Windows Explorer as well. That is easier on the eye and requires less brain power to use it due to the simpler look. The user can enlarge text and icons to make it much easier to navigate the screen, also.
You can also enlarge the blinking marker (caret) and cursor for visually ease of use. Don't forget to slow the cursor double-click so you don't overstress the hand tendons when using the mouse left click button.
For copy and paste as well as backup and restore jobs I use Robocopy (easy to learn-I simply use Robocopy (name of job) (source) (dest) /mir (for mirror). The regular Vista copy and paste is horribly slow as noted by many users. It's a bug and might be fixed in Vista's SP1 soon.

Yes that's wonderful. Really appreciate your input mgo. I might consider Acronis as I also want to upgrade my old T23 HDD which is only 20GB with win2000 pro that I want to keep. Maybe I should download the trial version to have a go in my old T23 and the new R61(hopefully the trial version is the same as the paid one at least).mgo wrote:=============rbi wrote:Product: ThinkPad R61 8918-5MMQuestions:
