New hard drive wont fit

#1 Post by dogtag1968 » Sat Jul 14, 2007 12:35 pm

I just bought a new hdd for my beloved R40, and the darn thing just wont fit. :( I got a brand new Seagate--100GB--Ultra ATA/100--5400RPM--8MB Cache--2.5" Drive PC or Mac.

I removed my 30 GB Hitachi, put the new drive in the sled and re inserted it. It didn't feel like pins fit into the ide plug, as they didn't.

I guess my question is, are the Ultra/ATA drives incompatible with my lappy? And so I don't make this mistake again, what type drive should I get in returning this one?

I appreciate your Wisdom and Advice,

TIA

The drive should fit no problem. Just make sure that you didn't flip the drive over in the caddy(sled), it is an easy mistake to make.

Another problem I encountered recently is that the bottom of the caddy, if not perfectly flat against the bottom of the drive, can interfere with plugging the drive in.

Are you sure you have the right side up? Double check.

I thought the R40 uses SCSI. My R40 drive is SCSI.

Compare the pins on the new drive and on the old one.

I had a similar problem when I inserted a drive into the ultrabay adapter. Turned out it was proper drive but just tight. It can be an uncomfortable feeling when you seem to have to "force" the drive in but as long as you are sure the interface is correct you should be ok.

New Darddrive wont fit

#7 Post by dogtag1968 » Sun Jul 15, 2007 11:45 pm

Thank you all for your replys.

But as I have inspected the new drive, there is a small plastic bracket on each side of the pins ( [ ::::::::::::::::::: :: ] ) that appear to stop the interface from making a connection. On the old drive there are no such brackets.

Apon reading the documentation that came with the drive, it states that professional installation is highly recommended. Because of the special tools requires for installation.

So it looks to me like I'm going to have to pay $40.00 to have a qualified tech reach in and snip the plastic brackets off so the connection can be made, the drive installed and my warranty be inforce.

IMHO------

Are you saying you bought Seagate 100 GB and Hitachi 120 GB, and the Seagate won't fit? Can you post the model number of the Seagate drive that you bought?

I'm sorry, but I returned the hdd and exchanged it for the 120gb Hitachi. The only info I have is in my original posting.
