That's called Electrostatic discharge. It can buildup in your clothes and make an impact with opposite polarity.

See more details including it's prevention here.

No that's not an el. discharge. It's a constant low current runnig through the titanium lid whenever the laptop is pluged in. My z61m has the same issue. I wouldn't call it a problem because it works well. But it's weird though.

It's present in corners of many Thinkpads, not having anything to do with the Titanium lid.

I don't think most people could feel 1 Volt. I cannot feel a 1.5 V, 6 V or 9 V battery for example. Also, the neutral wire in a house (nominally zero) often has around a volt on it inside an appliance or instrument. I cannot feel that.

So either you are very sensitive, or the voltage may be (incorrectly) higher than it should be. Right now on my T41, the DC voltage at a metal part relative to water-pipe ground is less than 1/100 of a volt. The AC voltage (if I am not touching the machine) is about 45 Volts. If I touch the metal point, it immediately drops to about 1.4 Volts, and I feel nothing.

Try connecting a volt meter and see if you can get a voltage reading. If you are concerned that there is voltage leakage...then you should call Lenovo and file a complaint. Perhaps there is a recall in the works.

However, my Z61t metal lid does not do anything more than a static discharge, but it would be interesting if you can actually measure a voltage across the lid and a good ground like a metal pipe.

Good luck...please report back to the forum.

It's not the voltage you feel... it's the current. By all means, hook up a voltmeter between an electrical outlet ground (not sure about the electrical building codes where you're at but generally the screw that holds the electrical outlet should be ground) and the laptop case. If you get a significant voltage reading, try reversing the AC plug and see if that helps. By reversing, I mean that you unplug the AC cord, rotate 180 degrees and plug back in. You may also want to check and see if your mains has been properly wired with respect to earth ground.

Are you using an original IBM AC adapter? And is it a 2 or 3-wire cord?

If it's a reversible 2-pin plug, try reversing it, and try wearing shoes while using your computer...

Wearing shoes is a good idea. I always do, so I never thought about that.

But if reversing a two-pole non-polarized plug makes a difference, then there is an electrical problem with the adapter or with the thinkpad, or indeed, with the building wiring. ... JDH
