Upgrade Internal WIFI------R30
I'm setting up a very nice R30 for my daughter. The unit has an internal 802.11b wifi card, what I'd like to do is upgrade to 802.11a,b,g . Is that possible? If so, would a pci-mini card from another R Series ThinkPad work?

Intel Pro Wireless MPCI Card
I think the part I've recommended will work, no guarantees. Contact the seller to ask before buying/bidding.

That's a great card, I upgraded to one in my R40. I did have to run the no-1802 CD but that was a simple ordeal.Harryc wrote:Intel Pro Wireless MPCI Card

On this page it says the R30 needs the generic card. So the one Harryc posted should work.

FYI, I had an R30 with internal wifi. It had the combo wifi/modem card.
I was able to install an IBM (Atheros) B/G without the no-1802 hack and a CDC modem in the open CDC slot.
It was a great upgrade. The HMM came in quite handy for accessing that CDC slot.
Perhaps an IBM A/B/G will work as well?

Underclocker, do you recall what is the part number for that card, looks like the wireless card in my R31 has gone kaput and I need a replacement.underclocker wrote:FYI, I had an R30 with internal wifi. It had the combo wifi/modem card.

Since my current card has the modem built into it and I do use dial-up from time to time, looks like I will have to get and installed the CDC modem as well.

R31 and R30 models use different motherboards and BIOS firmware. Therefore, what worked for me on an R30 won't necessarily work for you.
I don't have the part number, but it was an IBM b/g adapter.
You should probably do some more searching on this board to see if anyone else has done the upgrade on an R31. If not, you could do as I did and just give it a shot.
I try the upgrade with an IBM b/g or IBM a/b/g adapter and a CDC modem. Currently the adapters go for $25-30 and the CDC's go for about $5.
Good luck and definitely report back the results.
