Z61m Memory Upgrade

#1 Post by Dante » Wed Aug 01, 2007 5:18 pm

Hi there,

I am one of the lucky owners of a Z61m (T2500, 2GHz, 1GB RAM) and want to upgrade to 2 or 4 (read "3") GB.

Taking the wrist pad off, I found 1 x 512MB stick.
Where are the other 512MB hidden?
Did I miss something?

The manual doesn't answer this question and neither could the support I called.

Can anyone help me out and enlighten me on which Memory to get and where to install it?

Many thanks in advance

Check the bottom of the machine for a small plastic door held closed by one screw.

Z series does not have such mechanism for optional dimm. Both dimm slots are under the palmrest.

I think the OP is rather mistaking 1x1 GB standalone module for 1x512MB.

Note the memory sticks are stacked.

It is not necessary but a good practice to remove the finger print reader UltraNav pad cable everytime you open up the palmrest.

According to ltwbook:
2GB max / PC2-4200 533MHz DDR2 / non-parity / dual
channel capable / two 200-pin SO-DIMM sockets / std mem in 1 socket / 1 socket avail
Crucial, Corsair and OCZ are some good brands in my opinion, in fact in my experience.

I recently got a deal on a 2GB PC2-5400 kit from OCZ to upgrade from the 1GB I have after my friend had told me that even though the RAM thats in my laptop (A Z61m 9452) is PC2-5300. He said it would just merely bottleneck but it would still work. However, when I get to the login screen, the computer will lock up and the one time I was able to get into Windows, I got a blue screen. Is there something I have to do in the BIOS to make this work?

Well I'm a little bummed out. I just checked my Z61m before ordering some memory and my 1024 is configured with two 512 sticks. I guess I'll have to completely set them aside in order to bring my system up to 3 gigs. Have most people had one 1024 stick installed?

Sounds like a bad set of memory modules. I have used OCZ and so far have favorable results.

I did, but only for a pre-configured machine. In recent times, lenovo has added more customized options for DIMMs, you can choose among many combinations now.
