wrong Ram
wrong Ram
Hi
A bit of a dilemma.
I bought a thinkpad A31 from ebay, or so it was advertised. I have an extra 512 ram for “it”. Now I wanted to add it and noticed the one already there is a pc2700 which is not right. Should I put the one I have “the right one” which is pc2000 or keep the one in it as is? Or put both?
I wish I know if it has the right MB, if I do then I could find out which one is most suitable.
Thanks

The standard memory speed for the A31 is specified as PC2100, but generally speaking, a faster module can also be used. I don't believe that there ever was a PC2000 JEDEC spec so I can only assume that you actually have a PC2100 module. If so, you can install it along with the PC2700 that's already in there. I would also suggest that you download a copy of memtest86+ and run diagnostics on BOTH modules to make sure that they are functional.

Ray is exactly right of course, but to possibly put your fear further to rest. I'm currently and have for a very long time run 2700 RAM in my T30 (which is basically an A31 in another form). I have also at various times have had 2700 RAM in my wife's A31 as well.rkawakami wrote:The standard memory speed for the A31 is specified as PC2100, but generally speaking, a faster module can also be used. It's not absolutely required but it can give you peace of mind in case something comes up which makes you suspect a hardware (or even a software) problem. Running a memory diagnostic on any newly-acquired module should be the first order of business. That it boots Windows and seems to have no problems doesn't necessarily mean that it's perfect.
Of course, I'm a memory test engineer so that's where I'm coming from...
