R31 poweron issue.

#1 Post by gemstarbryan » Sat Aug 11, 2007 7:49 pm

my r31 went out and will not power on. I have a batterry light indicator, but no power indication light. Just checked motherboard and there is not a problem. Could this be a burned out mob or something? Need help to determine next step!

Power-on problems can have many reasons. As it appears you have a green/yellow battery charging LED when you plug in the AC adapter (at least that's what I get from your description), the battery and adapter would appear to be working correctly. To verify those two things, you would have to use a voltmeter and measure ~10.8V across the battery terminals and ~16.3V from the end of the AC adapter.

Assuming for the moment that those are okay, then if you do not get any power-on indication from the laptop when you press the power button, then a few things could have gone wrong:

- main fuse AND battery fuse has blown (I'm assuming that the R31 is similar enough in design the the T23s that I'm familiar with)
- keyboard power button is broken
- keyboard is not attached to the motherboard properly
- general power system problem on the motherboard (blown voltage regulator or power controller chip, loose part, etc.)

Simplest thing to do is to remove all easily removable devices: hard drive, Ultrabay, MiniPCI card, and memory. Then try to turn it on and see if you at least get some error beeps. If you do, replace the memory and power up again. If it works, continue to replace components until it doesn't power up.

As you have earlier requested the HMM, my best advice would be to follow the instructions concerning the power systems checkout and then disassemble the system enough to verify that everything is plugged in tightly, no loose component are rattling around in the case and that no obviously burned or fried components are visible.
