Suitable CPUs for upgrading R50e (1834-Q2G)?

I have a ThinkPad R50e (1834-Q2G) with a Pentium M 725 (1.6GHz). This may be a SL7EG CPU but I don't know - maybe someone can confirm... Now, I want to upgrade this to a faster CPU in order to reduce long render times when processing home video, but I don't know which CPUs are appropriate and compatible. For example, assuming I want to go to 2GHz, I suspect that a 400MHz Pentium 755 (not a 533MHz Pentium 760) and specifically a 478-pin SL7EM (not a 479-ball SL7EL) would be okay...

Any feedback appreciated, especially if you've already succeeded/failed in upgrading an R50e to a 2GHz CPU. Also, much appreciated if anyone can recommend a UK website that sells these older CPUs. Many thanks. By the way, I've just upgraded to 1GB RAM and, after upgrading the CPU, will start looking at upgrading the hard disk as well...

Besides costing you your first-born, there is a possible issue with heat build-up on the M755 and M765 processors in a R50e.

These were factors when I upgraded from a Celeron M340 to the P735 I now have. (Hindsight..I would have gone to 1.8..consenus seems to be this is the sweet spot on speed versus heat versus cost). Any processor I.D of 7X5 should work.

What really made my unit feel snappier was upgrading to a 7200 RPM. Maybe try this first.

Try the Buy/Sell forum..there are many reputable sellers that will ship internationally. Most of my upgrade items were obtained here.

ms5133: Thanks for the feedback. I will upgrade to a faster and larger hard disk soon, but my current speed bottleneck is the CPU (I want faster video renders).

A couple of quick queries on your message:
- Do you have a link to the possible heat build-up for an M755 in a R50e?
- You mention that any 7X5 CPU should work, so does that mean that both the 478-pin and 479-ball would fit?

What you need to look for is a 478 pin micro FCPGA package, SL7EM or SL7V3.

The other processor you were referring to in an earlier post, SL7EL is a FCBGA..notice the difference.

I do not think you will find a link that deals specifically with a M755 in a R50E..at least not in this forum. There are several general heat related threads about Dothan upgrades that helped me decide which CPU to install. YMMV.

- whether a 2.0GHz R50e is hotter than the 1.6GHz one;
- the percentage speed-up for my video rendering;
- whether it was worthwhile upgrading!

Many users here are very satisfied with the Seagate Momentus 7200.1 series of 2.5" HDD's - and you might consider them as an alternative to Hitachi's (one thing some put faith in is that the Seagate Momentus 7200.1 drives comes with a 5-year warranty, as oposed to Hitachi's - as far as I recall - only 2- or 3-year warranty). Well, even though my original post was about upgrading the CPU, I decide to order a hard disk upgrade after reading Johan's comment and the referenced threads. So, now waiting for a 80GB Seagate Momentus 7200.1 (ST980825A) to arrive - and hoping the data copy/transfer will work...

Please share your experience for hard drive upgrade when you will finish that. I think it is the best possible upgrade for you. I am planing to do the same thing with my brand new R50e. I think I will leave my Celeron M 370 1.5Ghz 1MB L2 Cashe (which is great CPU by itself) and will get 7200RPM hard drive and 2MB of memory. My R52e should fly then with this kind of fuel.

An update...

Today I successfully upgraded my R50e hard disk from a 40GB 5400RPM Hitachi to a 80GB 7200RPM Seagate Momentus 7200.1 (ST980825A). The data transfer process went smoothly using the free trial version of Acronis True Image Home (I set the partition sizes manually to ensure the system partition remained the same size). A recommended upgrade for approx £60 ($120) in UK...

However, my original intention to upgrade the Centrino CPU (from a 1.6GHz Pentium M 725 to a 2.0GHz Pentium M 755) has paused because the SL7EM chips seem quite rare in the UK, with used examples going for approx £85 ($170) on eBay. That doesn't seem good value to me for a 0.4GHz upgrade, although I expect it would be good value for someone upgrading from a Celeron...

ymemuser: I set the system partition (ie IBM_SERVICE) to 4.513GB on the new 80GB drive to keep it the same size as on my old 40GB drive. I set the other partition to 70.01GB to use up all the remaining space. Note that Acronis True Image Home tells you the size of your old system partition and I'd suggest just using that.
