I have problems to create an image of the predesktop area, as described in the white paper.
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 46023.html
I copied the files fwbackup and fwrestore to the IBM_SERVICE partition, rebooted into WINXP and opened a command prompt. After typing in the command
FWBACKUP FILE=C:\IMGSET SIZE=640
I get an error message, saying that cmd 16-bit is not able to access the disc directly in MSDOS Mode. The application FWBACKUP terminates with the error message
error: the specific drive was not detected.
I wonder what the drive specifications drv 0=pm 1=ps 2=sm and 3=ss are? The problem is I cannot use the tool FWBACKUP directly within the predesktop area because my FAT32 service partition is already full with the RRU backups and MSDOS cannot access the main NTFS partition IBM_PRELOAD.
Thanks for help

Re: fwbackup and fwrestore
Alexander, I've never tried to make such a backup myself, but my strong guess is that it simply won't work this way in XP, because the NT-type of operating systems does not allow direct hardware access which seems to be a prerequisite for this program to function properly.pohl668 wrote:I have problems to create an image of the predesktop area, as described in the white paper.

I'd recommend you to create (or download)...
http://www.bootdisk.com/
http://www.nu2.nu/bootdisk/
... a DOS bootable floppy, put the FWBACKUP.EXE on it and then boot up with it and save the backup either to a local FAT32-partition or a network share.
Re: fwbackup and fwrestore
Thank you for your help. I have used the network bootdisc from http://www.nu2.nu/bootdisk/ and successfully backuped the hpa to a network share.
1. But what exactly is doing the FWRESTORE program when I want to reinstall to an empty hard drive?
2. I've mounted just for fun the data partition 0x8888 to drive s: with FWMOUNT but I couldn't see any files (dir s: ). Beforehand I manually loaded the PSA disc driver with DYNALOAD.COM PSADISK.SYS. Any idea how to get access to the files stored in the hpa (exept from booting into factory restore and opening the DOS promt)?
