Display dim

#1 Post by furlan » Thu Aug 30, 2007 1:53 am

the display of my Thinkpad A21m turned dim some weeks ago.
When I bend the screen (right top corner back, left down joint forward) it switches to bright.
The very same happened to a friend of me with the same notebook and it can be made bright by bending the display.
We opened both diplays, searching for a loose contact or so, nothing to find. It was also not possible to activate the bright display with bending the screen when it was apart. After re-assembling it can be made bright again with hard bending.

Any hint where to look?
I read something about a inverter failure, but how can it be cured by bending the display?

When you say that you "opened both diplays", did you check the connector at the back of the LCD? I'd also suspect the LCD itself and the LCD ribbon cable. This does not sound like an inverter problem to me.

yes I checked all connectors, also the one on the display. They looked ok on both displays, pluging in and out, bending and wiggling did not change anything- the display stayed dim and colors looked a little faded but correct. after reassembling and bending the whole cover I could again reproduce correct brightness and colors on both laptops.
There is quite a force necessary to achieve this, its not just some µm bending, I'd say 5-10mm. The right upper corner held backwards and the left lower corner bent forward with the left hand in the back.

go to Start- all programs- PC doctor for windows.

To check your LCD. Emm.. I mean to check the colors (red, blue, green, yellow) to see if any of it is faded and yes, this is the first method to check your LCD for faded or washed off colors.

As for the other question, it is not related to the inverter. It is more on the (you know there is a black strip connecting from underneath the keyboard bezel to the LCD). Check on that cable.

EDIT: Can you try to connect your thinkpad to an external monitor..

Pc doctor

#7 Post by furlan » Sat Sep 01, 2007 12:12 am

the program pc doctor is not on my Pc. I have a standard Windows 2000 professional installed. The program you refer to seems to be a IBM specific addon. Where can I get it?
In the moment I have no monitor available to plug in. (I'm on holidays in Greece)

I looked for the program in Google and search in this forum.
google did not find it for download and this forum gave me a php error on my search.

But the colors of the screen look normal, they are just not so bright as they were before. Another difference is, when I shutdown the computer the screen gets dimmed even more (which is normal) but now it also flickers.

The dark brown ribbon cable looked good, no bends or so visible, bending it did not change anything. As mentionend before, only bending the hold sreen fixes the described way fixes the problem as long as I bend it.

PC Doctor for DOS

:P

And you can go to the IBM page and type PC Doctor in the search column and it will return you with some PC Doctor 5 results. You can download the DOS version and run it using DOS mode.

HTH ;-)

Pc Doctor for dos

#9 Post by furlan » Sat Sep 01, 2007 1:20 pm

I found a file, dowloaded it, when I start it, it says:

D:\Download\Pc doctor DOS>1ft109ww.exe
Syntax: OS2 /P <Voller Pfad> /C <Ursprüngliche Befehlszeile>

OS2?

the description says it is for DOS.

Could you please provide a download link for the file you are talking about?
in the downloads of IBM / Lenovo for my notebook I dont find anything related to pc doctor. (Thinkpad A21m)

thanks,

Sir, you can find it here. Please carefully read the Disk creation procedure.
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.

I made the disks and all tests said "passed".
no errors detected.
I still think it is a problem with the backlight or inverter.

that might be an intermittent problem. As long as you can read what's on the screen, it should be ok.. Unless it is extremely dark..

The screen is readable, but the colours are not as bright as they should be and it is about half the brightness of normal. It is a problem in bright light.
I'll try to get a new inverter and screen and see if it helps.
