R51 dvd burner question.

#1 Post by maro98 » Thu Aug 30, 2007 7:48 pm

Hi, I did some searching around and didn't see a definite answer so thought I'd ask. Are there any non-ibm DVD burners with ultrabay enhanced or ultrabay slim connectors on the back or some type of adapter to convert them from atapi available? I've got an R51 1830-BQU with a CD-RW/DVD-rom ultrabay slim combo drive and wanted to upgrade but the IBM/Lenovo branded super multi burner drive with DL support is a little pricey. I wanted one with DL support and possibly lightscribe and was hoping maybe some other brand existed that was compatible. Oh, and 12.7mm is more preferable to 9.5mm because it feels flimsy with a 9.5mm drive and I was hoping a 12.7 would give it more internal support. Correct me if I'm wrong on that.

Thanks.

Sir, I hear people say ebay is full of them.
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents on this...I have an R51 model number 2888-NU1 using a Matshita UJ-830S DVDRW Ultrabay Enhanced drive. I originally bought this drive on eBay not knowing the tempermental reputation for this particular Matshita drive.

Since then I've done my share of eBay/Google searches for a more reliable, consistant, non-Matshita replacement drive with no luck!

Sure there are plenty of drives listed out on eBay but all compatible models for the R51 I've found have been Matshita CRAP!

I've read somewhere in this forum that the R51 is the "red headed child" of the thinkpad series which makes it hard to find Ultrabay Enhanced drives for this tp.

In conclusion if anyone could post specific brands with their part numbers for (NON Matshita) DVDRW Ultrabay Enhanced drives or DVDRW Ultrabay Slim drives (I've also read in this forum Slim's will work in Enhanced slots with adapter's) that would work with the R51 that would make my freak'n year! :D

Almost correct, looky here, you do not need the adapter for R5* models.

Read it and
