Love my new R50!

#1 Post by ranchmom5 » Wed Sep 05, 2007 3:03 pm

Hi everyone,

I wanted to let you all know that the r50 I bought from underclocker has arrived and is up and running! I really love it. The flexview screen is awesome! We compared it with a Dell Inspiron last night and the difference was amazing. All of my kids are hooked and the 18yo is certain he will purchase a TP for his first laptop next year when he graduates.

Underclocker told me to get started on the IBM/Lenovo updates, but I am not sure what that means or how to do it.

Also, I tried to set up a network with my desktop today and I messed something up because after i went through the XP network wizard, I could no longer connect via wireless. I couldn't figure out how to undo what I did so did a system restore to get back to where I started. I want to be able to share some files with my desktop and also share the printer.

Other than my own ignorance, I am loving this TP! Fav features - flexview screen, awesome keyboard, super strong build and keyboard light.

Also, any advice on anti-virus, spyware, firewall software? I would love to keep this machine as clean as possible.

Congrats on your new R50. Ed's machines are practically new, you are a lucky buyer. Flexviews are amazing, it is difficult to go back to using regular screens after you use a flexview.

First download and install Microsoft .NET framework version 2 from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

After installing .NET and rebooting, download and install Thinkvantage System Update from the following link:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... VSU-UPDATE

Run System Update and it will find all drivers/updates for your machine. Also, remember to install all windows updates.

If you don't mind spending for anti-virus, I strongly suggest using NOD32. Forum members get a small discount too, see link on top of page below the banner. If you want a free antivirus, try AVG. Comodois an excellent free firewall. You can use Spybot and/or windows defender if you need anti-spyware tools.

Feel free to ask around if you have any doubts, and enjoy your R50!

I downloaded the NET and the windows updates. Also downloaded the Lenovo updates, but it says there is a conflict because there is already an updater on the computer and it needs to be uninstalled. When I tell it to go ahead and uninstall it says there is an error and I will need to uninstall manually. I don't know exactly what it is I am supposed to uninstall. Can someone tell me how to find it? don't want to remove the wrong thing!

Oops, sorry for missing that ... you first need to uninstall the existing version of system update or software installer in your machine. This might also be called 'IBM update' ... just open control panel --> add remove programs and look in the list. After you uninstall this, go ahead and install System Update 3.

I can't find anything that looks like "IBM Update". Any other thoughts of how/where to find it?

Hello again. The first software updater by IBM was called the "IBM Update Connector". This one should be removed prior to installing the newest "System Update 3.0", found here -> http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-66956

(And just for historical information, the second software updater was called "Software Installer".)

I believe under WinXP's, Control Panel, Add/Remove programs, you have to click on the Access IBM or Access IBM Tools icon at the top and then it will show a list of installed IBM utilities, it should be there.

(Glad you're enjoying the machine.)

Look for IBM update connector and Thinkpad Software Installer.
