R40 Video/sound problem?

#1 Post by nolson3183 » Sat Sep 08, 2007 2:42 pm

Hello All. I am the owner of an R40 series Thinkpad. The problem Ive been having with it, is that if the laptop is moved, nudged or sometimes just hitting a key, it causes the screen to go blank. If I had music going at the time, it will stop as well. To fix this, I have to hold the power button down for 10 seconds and cycle the power. Sometimes it takes more than one attempt. This is happening frequently now. Does anyone have any ideas on this problem or any possible solutions? Thanks

You may have a loose GPU on the motherboard. If so, this may require a motherboard replacement or you may be able to fix it with a heat gun.

See http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=47119 for more details. I think there are a few different threads about this topic here - you will have to search for them.

Thank you for the information. I had no idea what the problem could be, and did a few searches in the forums to no avail. Hopefully this information will give me the direction I need to fix the problem. I'll post a reply if I can fix it. Thanks again.
