A31p: New Bios version 1.10 -> Cpu still upgradeable?

#1 Post by dperron » Mon Nov 01, 2004 8:30 am

Hi,

I would like to know if the latest bios version for the A31p (with "Cpu microcode update") still permits to upgrade the CPU to a 2.6 Ghz Pentium 4-M?

Btw does anyone know where i could find a 2.6 Ghz Pentium 4-M for less than US $300-600?

Thanks everyone!

David

sure, you can still update it.

I am using 2.5 right now and it works just fine.

david,

about the cpu, I am thinking of selling mine. if you are interested, you can pm me. However, I am in Indonesia right now. So if you are interested, we can talk about it over the internet.

thanks

David,

I too am looking for a 2.6GH chip for my A31p. Wold be interested in your sharing info on source and pricing.

my information is that the spec for this CPU is:

Mobile Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor - M
2.6 GHZ-M 512K 400FSB S478
BXM80532GC2600D
Mobile Intel 845 Chipset Family (845MP)
SL6WZ
OEM RH80532GC06451

Circa USD605..619 at...

http://search.netscape.com/ns/boomframe ... inpe4.html

http://search.netscape.com/ns/boomframe ... 3DB1P2A2H2

.. just too rich for me (have 2GH OEM chip now)

Then there is this site with much lower prices .. but something does not compute for me...

http://search.netscape.com/ns/boomframe ... 526f%253D1

If interested in the P4M chips, see the Intel page below...

http://search.netscape.com/ns/boomframe ... 007488.htm

Well, that is from my perch.

They don't compute because, with the exception of the last one on the second page, they're desktop CPUs.

The cheapest I've ever seen the 2.6GHz mobile CPUs was $290 (Whoops! Edit.) each in a lot of 20.

The specs listed above for the SL6WZ chip are correct. I upgraded my A31p from 1.7 to 2.6 in December 2003, and it works like a champ (also have 1GB RAM and 7200 rpm 60 GB HDD). Got my chip from an eBay seller for $320 (he bought them in bulk). Seller email at that time: Wbutch007@yahoo.com. Mark Bell's article on upgrading "Tripping the laptop fantastic: Upgrading an A31p from a Intel Mobile Pentium 4 1.7ghz to a Mobile Pentium 4 2.6ghz" really helped. I felt like a butcher taking the machine apart, but the hardware manual gave me confidence that it could be done. Right now couldn't find anything on eBay. [Next step is trying 2GB RAM with finally-released 1.10 BIOS]

Sleep,

The 2GB upgrade is a slam-dunk in the A31. Anything listed as working in a T4X series machines will work in the A31.

Oh, and welcome to the Forums.

Concerning Mark Bell's article on upgrading "Tripping the laptop fantastic: Upgrading an A31p from a Intel Mobile Pentium 4 1.7ghz to a Mobile Pentium 4 2.6ghz", do you have its URL?

Please be so care, first because 2,5Ghz have more heat that tp fan could save, but most important use a 120w supply adapter, or the two self of tp system board on tpA31 burn, for me= tp31p+dvdrw+usb mouse+tv usb, now have external 12v300w atx power, not so easy to transport... :?

Hello!

I own an A31p (P4 2.0ghz, 1gig ram, 80gig hdd, 2xdvds, ATI FireGL 7800 1600x1200, 15" tft, wireless, bluetooth, ethernet, etc the usual..)

I've been told in the past that i can't upgrade my cpu to another faster than what i've already got (Intel Pentium 4 2.0ghz). My cpu is not one of those used in centrino laptops.

This thread sort of confused me. Is there a possibility to upgrade? what are my options?

Thank you.

CPU Upgrade for A31P

#17 Post by friedrich-eugen » Fri Mar 04, 2005 4:15 am

Hello sehh,

no, if You stick to the specs of Intels chipset (845MP) and intels cpu's (Pentium 4 M, not (!) Centrino) You'll find that the highest You'll get will be 2,6Ghz, 512k cache, 400Mhz frontsidebus.

Connectors, termal specs etc should fit. As far as others wrote here temperature should remain within limits.

The problem rather is to find some cpu (boxed) at reasonable prices. As far as I have understood, Intel does not produce them any more...

friedrich-eugen, thanks for the information.

i'd love to play with a 2.6ghz cpu on my A31p. i'll look around for a cpu, though i dont know if i'll have much luck since i live in Greece and parts like that are even rarer to find.

also, is it easy for me to do the upgrade on my own? i'm compatent with PC hardware and i've done a few simple upgrades on laptops, though i've never gone far enough to open the system board and replace a cpu.

CPU Upgrade for A31P: Do it Yourself?

#19 Post by friedrich-eugen » Thu Mar 10, 2005 4:58 am

Well sehh,

I have not yet done it on my A31P, foremost as I've not yet got a 2,6ghz cpu at a reasonable price, but also in order not to loose warranty.

I have done cpu and graphics repair/update on a 770X before, following
(1) IBM's hardware maintenance manual closely,
(2) having someone at my side watching my actions and comparing with the manual's recommended procedure and last not least
(3) having a complete set of new screws (bought from IBM).

It took me some hours, as I did it slowly, but I did not have to do any step twice, screws fitted and did not come loose. The laptop started perfectly on first demand after repair and upgrade.

So, yes, You can do it, guided by IBM's manual it is not too difficult. You will find IBM's TPs are properly constructed and well organised. Repair or/and upgrade has been in the mind of those designing it.

I am not normally a procrastinator .. yet on my CPU upgrade I did just that. Now that I have decided to do it, I can't find one in the market.

I hesitated on the P4M 2.6GHz chip because of cost .. moved down to 2.5GHz .. and now can't find one.

Does anybody in our TP community know of a source that HAS inventory?
