A31 Ultrabay

#1 Post by jrv331 » Wed Sep 12, 2007 8:40 pm

Are the bays on both sides UltraBays? I have a second battery in the one on the left and want to swap between a second HDD and DVD drive on the right. Any problems with this?
Thanks
John

They are both Ultrabays:

- the left side is an Ultrabay 2000
- the right side is an Ultrabay Plus

What's the difference? http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/UltraBay says that you can put an Ultrabay 2000 device into either bay, but the Ultrabay Plus devices can only go in the right side. Plus devices are fairly rare in my experience (numeric keypad and Palm cradle).

So to answer your question, no, you should not have any problems with either the 2nd HD adapter or DVD drive.

Thanks for the answer. I read that the UltraBays for the A31 are hot swappable. Say I have my computer running on AC with both the main battery and UltraBay battery installed and fully charged. If I remove the main battery no problems, computer still works fine, if I remove the UltraBay battery my computer goes into suspend and stays there until I put the battery back in. Any Ideas why this would be?
Thanks

Hmm... the A31 on the desk here at work goes into Suspend mode when I flick the eject lever (on either bay). It's running Windows 2000. The T23 I'm typing on allows me to eject the DVD burner without entering suspend (i.e., hot swap) but it's running Windows XP. Maybe that's the difference? I'll have to admit that I don't know much about hot swapping Ultrabay devices since I don't do it. I normally use Windows' "Safely Remove Hardware" function to stop the device prior to taking it out.

Im running XP and can eject the dvd player with no ill effects as well, its just the Ultrabay battery that causes the suspend mode. I usually use XPs removal utility as well but thats not an option for the battery.
Thanks

My wife's A31 suspend any time I flip the eject lever on either the Ultrabays regardless of whether I stop the device or not. Neither my T23 or my T30 does this. I'm able to "hotswap" on either machine. This has aways mystified me. :?

Same with mine, if you slide the eject switch, the laptop goes into suspended mode. With my old 770ED, the laptop stayed on while I was doing it.

Even if I just use the "safely remove" feature with out removing the battery it goes into suspend mode. As far as I can tell I have every option for suspend mode shut off. Im stumped here.

Just picked up a second HDD from Ebay - we'll see how it goes after swaping with the dvd drive.
Thanks for all the input
John
