R50 v. R50P

#1 Post by iv76erson03 » Thu Sep 13, 2007 10:33 am

I'm thinking about upgrading my T23 to a R50. I saw some P models that have the 128MB Fire GL T2 videocard. How much better is that card over the 32MB Radeon 7500 found in the standard versions? Are there any other pros or cons between the two models? Thanks for the info.

Go to this site and download the trwbook PDF file. It lists detailed specs for the R50 and R50p. Decide for yourself whether the differences between the models matter to you.

IMO, the biggest downside of the R50 is that one can't upgrade the LCD to 2048x1536, at least not easily. Only the R50p allows one to do that. But if you aren't interested in such a modification, then this limitation won't affect you.

It's considerably faster. The Fire GL T2 is based on the ATI 9600 GPU. If you're ever experienced one of them you'll get the idea. As for whether or not it's worth it, if you don't use any 3D apps, then no. Only you can answer that. I see PW answered the LCD question, so there you have the whole picture.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but wouldn't 2048x1536 on a 15" inch screen be nearly illegible? I was worried enough about the 1600 x 1200 being too small.

btw, thanks for the link

Welcome to the forum.

Also, R50's come with either 14" XGA or 15" XGA or 15" SXGA+ LCD's, R50p's only come with 15" UXGA.

The R50p video will be faster.

R50p's also had faster hard drives and faster processors (1.7GHz vs. 1.5GHz or lower).

All models optionally had a/b/g wifi, bluetooth and firewire.

Choosing one depends on price/need.

I am reading your post perfectly fine on my R50p's 2045x1536 screen LOL! But of course, things do look very small on the screen. Most people find 1600x1200 acceptable though, so if you have an opportunity to get a Thinkpad with that resolution, I strongly recommend you to give it a try.

All R50p's do have 15" FlexView UXGA displays, the R50 models with 15" SXGA+ resolution are also FlexView.

FlexView is preferred by many.

I would say go for one that has Flexview. A great example of what it is like is located here. In the twelve photos he has comparing the Dell to the T60p, in only two of them the Dell screen is reproducing decent colors.

I wish this technology were more widespread as a laptop display has got to be one of the tougher types of displays to get positioned correctly for viewing. I hope i'll eventually be able to get one myself once my credit posts for the Dell I returned last week...

Be forewarned though: once you go with FlexView (if you end up liking it, that is) you won't be able to go back to anything else...crack cocaine has nothing on FlexView screens when it comes to addiction...

Take it from someone who currently has 9 FlexView ThinkPads...including 4 R50Ps (2 are for sale, BTW)...

Good luck with your noble quest.

Yeah, I saw those, and was thinking about taking one off of you. They both the same price and same specs? I would want 1GB RAM.

The machines are identical, and the additional RAM is not a problem...even if you don't buy it from me, R50P is a great ThinkPad for the price...
