Changing R30 fan/cool unit

#1 Post by alect » Mon Sep 17, 2007 5:11 pm

I have recently replaced a crashed HDD on an old R30 so that my daughter can use it (she's only 3). Have OS loaded but the fan is very loud (I forgot it was doing that). So I looked online and can get a replacement fan/cool unit for around $30. How easy is it for a lay person to replace the fan in an R30? Is there a site with instruction on how to open these up?

I was also wondering - do I need to replace the fan? It is very loud and makes a whirring noise - not just air spinning but actual parts. I recall when I was using it years ago it had stopped as it had cat hair and dust in it but we think we cleaned it out. Is it just loud or failing?

Please download the Hardware Maintenance Manual. It has all the info. you require.
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.

Thanks - downloaded it and read through it. But I don't see anywhere where it tells me how to change the fan/heatsink. The only thing it does say is that only authorised personnel should service the laptop :?

You didn't look too hard. Instructions for fan removal start on page 71.
