R30 CMOS battery replaced; boots/restarts fine; loses time!

#1 Post by Red_October_7000 » Thu Sep 27, 2007 12:52 am

Well as my previous thread stated, I eventually got my R30's CMOS battery holder fixed and the battery replaced. Now whenever I open it up again it has lost a lot of time from the system clock! What is going on here? Granted this is a lot better than a brick, but it's [censored] annoying.

EDIT: I mis-spelled the title. I feel dumb :? . Yay me.
Edit 2: I left it on while I did other things, and it loses time even while it's running. This is very peculiar.

Try running PCDoctor. I believe it has a CMOS test or two.

How much time loss/gain are you seeing? Are we talking multiple hours every time you notice the error or random number of minutes/hours?

I just opened it up now 00:21 Friday, having put it away about 04:45 yesterday morning before going to sleep. It lost almost the entire day. This is bizzare! Before this it just seemed to run perhaps an 80-second minute. I never thought to sit and actually time the clock though.

About the only thing I can think of that would cause something like that would be a wrong crystal oscillator frequency for the real-time clock (RTC). As Harryc mentioned, PC Doctor has some tests which might help. In addition to the CMOS test, there's one for the RTC (part of the Systemboard checks). Try running that and see what it says.

edit: I'd also double-check the CMOS battery and make sure it has the proper voltage (3V) and polarity. There could still be a problem with it which is causing your time problems.

I'll have to check the CMOS battery now because the strangest thing happened... I did the PC doctor checks, the CMOS checks out OK but the clock now has jumped about 55 minutes AHEAD now...

Oh and what's more, the video card failed the linedraw test...
