Will I need a new fan

#1 Post by jrv331 » Fri Oct 05, 2007 6:11 pm

I want to upgrade the processor in my A31 from its 1.6g. If I go to a 2.0 or 2.2g will I need a new fan as well? Is it worth the few bucks to move to the 2.0G?
Thanks
John

Im looking at the parts list for the A31's and it only lists two fans, 46L4697 & 62P4092. It doesn't say which unit is in my machine but both of these will cover a 2.0g processor(according to model numbers). How do I know I cant use my current fan? Just wait and see if I get lock ups or constant errors after it warms up?
Thanks
John

When you smell the melting plastic you'll know...

Take out the fan that you have now, write down the FRU, and buy the other one.

I've had more A3 machines than most people get to see in a couple of incarnations.

Fan from a 1.6 will not do well with a 2.0 processor. Fans are cheap. What seems to be the issue?

Just trying to understand.

I hate to dig up an old topic but I have some relevant info. I have had a 2.2GHz working happily with the old fan, idling at 42C and running never hotter than 57C at full tilt boogy for almost 2 years. It took careful placement of the fan/ heatsink assembly, a bit of cleaning and polishing, and arctic silver to get it there. Previously I had a 1.6GHz that ran hotter. I have found getting the heatsink on right to be the biggest factor in getting the heat out of there.

SO will a 2.2 or 2.4 processor work with the old fan? MAYBE. I think it should be evaluated on a case by case basis.
