A30 and A31 base compatible ?

#1 Post by fasterbybike » Wed Oct 17, 2007 8:33 pm

OK, here's another transmogrify question !

Can I place the mobo and base innards from an A31P into the shell of an A30 series (base only). I have access to a cosmetically great A30 base.
The A30/31 hardware book shows the same keyboard bezel used for the A30/A31 (P/N 46L6401) but a myriad of parts for the base. I'm not sure if this relates to the different regulatory stickers for certain countries or if there were plastic moulding changes along the way too.

Putting the two next to each other, the only difference I can see is the A30/A31 base doesn't have the little notch cut out for the Firewire port like on the A30p/A31p base. This is also comparing two 15" models, not sure about the 14" ones, I've only had (four) 15" A3x's

I think I will wait until I can get a tidy A31 base. Thanks.

The corner with the little 'notch' on the A31p or without on the A31/A30 is actually a small plastic cover that is glued on. You can remove it by pushing it up.

Simply switch this little cover from the A31P base to your A30 base and you're in good shape.

Answering my own question ...
The A30 and A31 base plastics appear to be the same apart from the firewire port as previously noted. Both the plastic mouldings are stamped with the same P/N 26P9354. However, the metal plates that are moulded into the plastic are different, to correspond the the cooling requirements of the different mobos. Given the history of problems with insufficient cooling of GPUs, my advice would be to stick with a FRU that matches either A30 or A31 as appropriate.

The A31 is printed IBM ASM P/N 46P3128 made in China.
The A30 is printed P/N 26P9353 made in Mexico.

None of these part numbers correspond to FRUs in the HMM. HTH.
