A31 Embedded Controller Update

#1 Post by Axemonkey » Fri Oct 19, 2007 11:25 pm

I am trying to run the correct embedded controller update from Lenovo and the system tells me that 'Embedded Controller Update is Disabled' and aborts the process. I am also unable to complete a BIOS update... please help!
I never met a Thinkpad I didn't like...

Check in BIOS for an option something to the effect of 'user able to flash BIOS'. Most BIOS's have that option, enable it.

I did find that... and it got me a bit farther... now its insisting my a31 isn't plugged in... and it is. it shows the battery icon all the time even when its plugged in.. pretty much the problem im trying to solve with the controller update... also if i try to turn on with the battery removed, it gives battery critically low error and shuts down.. i have tried 2 different PSU's .. same thing. Any suggestions?

Other than the fact that the battery indicator is always on (always on green is normal by the way. Abnormal is always solid or flashing orange), does the battery charge and the laptop otherwise run normal on both battery and AC?

Most of the time.. however sometimes the battery seems to take a surface charge... and will go from 100% right down to almost nothing.. and tell me to save my work so as not to lose data blah blah...

My guess in order of probability of failure is;
Battery
AC adapter jack
Systemboard

Well you could be right.. but it should start up with the AC power and no batttery and not give a crticial battery error shouldnt it?

Correct. A normal, working A31 will work on the AC adapter alone, no problem. Definately sounds like the battery is dead. But the computer works and stays on for a long period of time with the battery in the bay and the AC adapter plugged in? weird.

Yeah, it is isn't it! I actually am almost convinced there is an isue with the power service to my house. I live in a VERY old home (1920 or so) in Vancouver BC .. all of the wiring electrical or otherwise is very very old. I have been having trouble with all my rechargeable batteries and devices not holding charges properly.. and all of them are brand new. I also just sold an A21p that was doing the same thing. Fortunately I'm moving in about a month.. I'll know for sure then! Any other suggestions would still be helpful though! The unit turns on and runs flawlessly with the battery in and the AC plugged in. It won't turn on with just the AC.. critical battery error.. ghost in the machine?
