A31 Shuts Down When Removing AC

#1 Post by jrv331 » Sun Oct 21, 2007 6:11 pm

I run my system 90% of the time using the AC adapter with the main battery and an UltraBay battery installed. Every once in awhile when I pull the AC tip out, the computer shuts down even thought the batteries are fully charged. I looked at the AC pin on the computer and it does not appear to be damaged. Ive had this system about a week and this just started happening this afternoon. Any ideas
Thanks
John

What about the battery? Is it original from IBM or generic?

Look at the following thread too:

A22M ThinkPad dies Immediately once AC pwer is turned off.

Thanks for the link, I didnt see that one in my search. Naturally I forgot to mention in my original post that I have been using the same AC adapter, main/Ultrabay battery in my other A31 for over 3 months and have never had a problem. Both batteries are genuine IBM batteries. They charge to 100% but only last about an hour each.
Thanks

Ive noticed it only happens when XP's "charging" icon for the battery is not present. The battery goes to 100% and the icon goes away - if I mouse over the "plug" icon it says - on ac power. If I remove the ac the system shuts down.

If you tried to boot without the AC, would you be able to?

Yep, no problems what so ever. It will run fine until the batteries die, about an hour.

New symptom. Now the "AC" symbol in the system tray is not present with the battery installed, nor does it appear that its charging the battery(no charging symbol). I have read some info that it might be a problem with the solder at the ac pin. Any one have any clue here?
Thanks

It just keeps getting better. I have always been able to start the computer with no battery. Today I tried starting it with out the battery and got the critical battery error 0190 error and the computer shuts down. If I put in a dead battery it will not start, I have to use a battery with some charge in it to start the system. Once its started it works great. What would prevent it from starting with out the battery?

Is the motherboard shot?

Thanks

Most likely.
