Windows setup not detecting R60 HDD

#1 Post by Guv'nor-K » Sun Oct 21, 2007 9:13 pm

I had loaded up the Ubuntu OS on this R60 after formatting the drive. After carefully following every step one has to go through to setup a dual ubuntu/xp setup, I was left stranded when the time came to install Windows XP. I popped in the CD, it loaded up the setup, but then said that it could not find a 'hard drive connected to the system'.

Ubuntu on the other hand is working fine. I'm using it to type this. So the problem couldn't be hardware related.

How do I make the Windows setup detect the hard drive??

HDD Model : Toshiba MK4032GSX

Note: The system had Windows Vista on it prior to the format and Vista had stopped loading after a hard drive driver update would make the system blue screen when Vista would try to load. (both through normal and safe mode).

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Whenever doing a dual boot you should always install Windows first because it will overwrite your mbr so you can't get back to Linux. Linux will install a bootloader that will allow access to both Windows and Linux.
Windows can't see the hard drive because it is formatted for Linux and Windows can't see Linux formatting.

True, but then I had used GParted after installing Ubuntu to create unallocated space for XP. I had used this exact same procedure on T43, and that worked out fine...any ideas?

Try formatting the partition as FAT32. Maybe Windows will see it then.

I tried formatting to FAT32, NTFS, leaving it as unallocated space. No luck. Do you think something like FDISK would work?

You can give it a shot. I have never had a problem like that.
Where is your windows partition located? I think windows wants to be in hda1/sda1.

Where can I download an FDISK image file? Id need to make a bootable disc..

Any other software, that could format the drive would do as well. So long as I can boot up the system with it.

You're running in compatibility mode in the BIOS? That should allow the XP CD to see your hard drive. The XP CD as noted lacks the SATA drivers to see the drive which putting it in compatability mode will fix. Alternatively, you can slipstream in the SATA drivers in using nLite or Service Pack 2 works as well.

I am running XP and Gutsy at the moment. As noted it works best when Windows is loaded first.
