Memory upgrade: Thinkpad R61

#1 Post by csloth » Mon Oct 22, 2007 9:29 am

Hi

I'd like to upgrade my R61 (7732) with two new slots of memory (2*1GB Ram)

As it's configured now, it has 2*512 and that, I have learned, is not enough.

So I've found this slot, which Kingston says is compaible with the R61: http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configu ... L-TP667/1G

But I've also found this slot, which is a lot cheaper:
http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configu ... 667D2S5/1G

However, I don't know whether the last slot is compatible with the r61. Does any of you guys know?

I've searched for detailed specs and I figure that they are identical. But I could be wrong.

Help appreciated - thanks :)

The second one is "value RAM" which has been repoted to have issues when working in ThinkPads, although not in DDR2...that I know of...

People have reported problems with PC2100 and 2700 versions of this RAM type when installed in IBM/Lenovo machines.

The choice is, of course, yours.

I purchased 1GB of RAM (Kingston Value Ram) for our R60e just last week from NewEgg..it was around $27 shipped. No issues or concerns whatsoever. The other slot has an OE 256MB strip in it.

oki, thank you. Maybe it's worth a try, then.

I can buy two slots of "ValueRam" for the price of one of the other slots (that on the other hand are guranteed to be compatible with lenovo).

I will wait a day or two, so please - if anyone is aware of issues/no issues using valueram - i'd like to know :)

edit: wrote the above before I saw uberTs reply.

Getting convinced that these valueram's worth a try. I will order it soon and keep you postet on what happens

I have now installed the new slots of Ram and so far I've had no problems at all.

Wow, this extra memory really made the difference..

I guess now I just need to figure out whats really needed of all this Lenovo software that's running in the background...
