IBM R40 Thinkpad no sound issue

Alright so everything was working fine up until yesterday which is when i noticed i wasn't getting any sound from the speakers or the headphones jack. I then tried to update the audio driver to see if that would fix it in which it didn't. This isn't the first time i've had this problem either. But now i have no idea what to do, the sound isn't muted, the speakers icon shows up on the taskbar but still no sound. I went and tried to run a test with PC-Doctor and the outcome turned out to be only working with getting a BEEP. I don't know what to do now. I do not have a recovery disc because this laptop was supplied by my high school which i graduated from last year so the only thing they gave me was office 2003 and xp pro disc. Is the xp pro cd the recovery cd? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

issue fixed, i think.. somehow the master volume settings were screwed up.
