Picking a HardDrive

#1 Post by gobo » Sat Nov 13, 2004 5:18 pm

What are the requirments for a decent harddrive for a A22m
Questions that come to mind are:
* Are all 2.5 Harddisk compatable with TP (assuming the height is right)
* What do I want power consumption to be
* Decent RPMs?
* What other considereations are there?

(Mind you I never had a laptop before, so this a quest for hints)

Any help and hints will be appreciated.

I'm guessing all Hitachi/IBM Travelstar drives will fitt. You can check the specs for each drive to find the power consumption.

I just bought a 30 GB Travelstar (4200 RPM ) for my A20M and it's plenty fast if you've got enough RAM in your machine (I'm gussing constant swapping to a 'slow' disk might become anoying)

The most important consideration next to performance is noise IMHO - glad to say the Travelstar model I bought is noiseless once installed.

I picked up a new 40GB Hitatchi 7200 RPM drive on eBay for $80. It makes my TP R40 feel as fast as my desktop. I read a Hitatchi white paper that the 7200 RPM drives are 66% faster than the 4200 RPM drives. In terms of battery life, I am still getting between 4 and 5 hours with conservative power settings.
