Which type dvd do I use?

#1 Post by tkandl » Wed Nov 28, 2007 8:16 pm

I have an R61 with a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GMA-4082N ATA Device [CD-ROM drive].

Can I use any DVD-RW type in it for burning?

Thanks

That is a DVD burner. To be certain, go to Parts Lookup page and do a search on that Service part number afterwards.

Which DVD...

#3 Post by tkandl » Thu Nov 29, 2007 7:01 am

Thanks rvengineer.

Now that I know I have a combo cd/dvd reader/writer, which media format for DVD RW should I be using? There seem to be several different DVD media types. I would like to store photos, data, and also create backups of my laptop. Do I need several different types of DVD media or would one type do all?

Thanks

You can do everything with one media type, no need for combining them...

If you take your media drive out, write down the FRU number associated with it and look it up on Lenovo's website, you'll be able to see what media you can or can't use with it.

There are three types of DVD media: DVD+R, DVD-R and DVD-RAM. There's no practical difference between + and - R. You can use either to burn discs. DVD-RAM is a bit different. Once you format the disc, you can drag and drop files in Windows Explorer. DVD-RAM also has better error correction. It makes an excellent choice for backups though the discs are more expensive.
